Creativity wormhole

Where does your creativity come from?

Do we control our creativity or is it a mythical wormhole that opens up at random and feeds our mind with thoughts and ideas for us to work on?

As a professional creative, can we really afford to rely on the random sequence of events that we have built as a base for our creativity? Is it possible to force our minds into this space so we can draw on it at any time and if so how can we do this?

One question I would be inclined to ask is how often are we being creative, are we letting ourselves create bad or ok work along with the great work? Our pride and ego can often get in the way and the fear of creating something that is not our best can stop us creating anything at all! It’s a fact, every photograph we take, passage that we write, or picture that we paint, is not going to be groundbreaking. Like anything, creativity requires dedication, practice and hard work every day. As soon as we get out of the mindset that creativity comes only from a romantic vision and the Goldilocks headspace the sooner we will create groundbreaking work more often!

Windswept

Windswept

A moving snapshot of my art photography series “Windswept”.  I absolutely loved shooting this series and it was, like many of my personal creative projects an ongoing thing that played at least some part in my other shoots.  I found that the gentle movement and expression, softened the subject for my shoot and loosened them up when the serious shooting started.  Let go, relax is how these images roll.

The Ocean

You are the sun setting
I am the sun rising

You are the rivers flowing
as I am the wind blowing

You are the bath water
I am the ocean

You are the fireflies
as I am the stars

You are the thunder
I am the lighting

You are the calm before the storm
and I am the storm

The beauty of photographing the ocean is as relaxing as walking beside it. When we step into our landscape photographer role we should always look closer and see the ocean as its own entity, focussing on the small details that she gives us. The feelings of calm, rage and exhilaration. She is a sexual wonderment, surging, pulsing and flowing around us.

Last night I spent time at sunset, looking closer, making pictures and getting wet. The light was coming in perfectly with warm air surrounding the beach. The perfect atmosphere for making pictures. I screwed on my 24mm tilt shift lens, using a large aperture and shifting the lens to extremes to make the shallow depth I wanted. My aim to focus only on a small part of the ocean, her details and accents, forcing the viewers to look where I want them. The performance was amazing, with the oceans twists, turns and pulsating rhythms in betweens the calm smooth spells.

Last night was a great night to make pictures and has inspired me for a longer series. These pictures are available for sale as framed fine art prints.

Rainbow warrior

So Friday, it was awesome to have my super colourful friend into the studio for a long overdue catch up and creative session. With Kristen behind the styling and body paint wheel, I set up the lighting to create some isolation giving the pictures room to breathe some fresh air and give that stunning dash of colour a subtle glow.  Using a slight take on the evanescence lighting style, cranking up the volume, the flash heads boomed with each shot, filling the studio with more white light than the pearly gates!  I love to shoot creative headshots for actors, it puts me in a place where my juices can flow and fills my sou!  More shoots like these please, bring me your wildest dreams and I’ll make them into life.

With your heart full of colour you will always be a Rainbow warrior

Oisin & Malachy live @ The Jade Monkey, Adelaide

So last week I was out walking the streets with a camera, shooting without an agenda watching Adelaide start to build atmosphere before the Fringe.  Rundle street was filled with Fringe acts practicing and getting a feel for what was to come.  Those of you who know me personally will know that more often than not I love my music, raw and dirty with a blue undertone.  Having been a fan of people like Newton Faulkner and John Butler for many years, when I hear the sound of someone  (excuse the description, I only mean this semi literally) bashing the crap out of a guitar… Im going to stop and listen!

With a large crowd surrounding him, captivated by the sounds and honest rapport, Oisin & Malachy sits among an impressive street setup, filling the street with bluesy drum guitar tones.  I took a few snaps and stayed until the end of the set and made sure I bought a cd (even though the only cd player  with quality sound I have is in the Kombi which is still off road).

Hearing Malachy was playing the Jade Monkey the following Friday, I cruised by after a friend and fellow studio cohabitants Art exhibition opening at BMG. (which you should also go check out)

The support act was just finishing at this point and during the 15 minutes interval  Malachy was on the side chatting to the crowd prepping to go make some music.  We had a bit of a chat and was introduced to a couple of photographers who were there to shoot the performance.

I got a beer and the show started.  I wasn’t there to shoot, but to just check out some tunes…  However, I know myself too well and cannot resist temptation and always have some kind of camera on me, I was carrying my Fuji with a fixed 50mm prime lens.  I love this camera for its small size, silent operation and super fast 1.4 aperture, sweet for low light shooting like this.  I hear many people say that if you are too busy trying to take a picture, you are missing the moment and are not present.  Where this is the case sometimes, for me music and picture making comes hand in hand and making photographs is as much part of the moment as anything else.  To make great pictures, you have to feel the music which personally brings me closer, you listen to every beat and tone, and watch every gesture with so much more detail.  If you are not in the music, how can you photograph it?

The night of music was awesome!  Malachy has a great sense of honesty and passion in his delivery, he has an ability to bring his crowd in close and build a relationship with them with stories  about his journey via music and speech.  You come away with a feeling that you have met someone new and I think this is so important for any artist and he nails it!

So I really hope the pictures express how the evening was for you, if you were not there I hope they make you want to go to another time, you really should, if you love great music with a personable down to earth guy, get yourself along!  Music is always best when the artist plays from one place only, not a show, just an expression of self.  I caught up with Malachy after the gig for a few beers and can guarantee that what you see and hear on stage, is what you get in person and thats the key!

Cheers, Lee
